architectural foundings

So, how random is architecture? Random enough to be considered without domain? When a mud wasp steals material from a clay bucket, wings its way to a protected eave, and deposits the stolen material in an exacting manner...is this a random act? Is it determined by innateness, therefore not random?
Driven by precedent or innateness, Frank Gehry's visual vocabulary has exploded in a focused way in the past fifteen years. Gehry's architecture is regarded by many of his contemporaries to be "ego driven". Is this a correct criticism? Are his movements across paper with pencil/pen in hand random acts? Is he driven like the wasp...or is this facet of human development different than that of insects and animals?
